Chakra means wheel in Sanskrit, and the chakras of humans are wheels of energy.  Life force energy flows in and out of us through the chakras.

 

Each chakra has an area of life that its energy affects particularly.  If a chakra is closed down or out of balance, the life energies in that area will be affected. Open, strong and balanced chakras make all areas of our life energies better and promote health and healing.

 

 
       From the bottom up, these are the chakras:

 
 
Muladhara - Root or Base Chakra - First Chakra
Associated with:  connection to the Earth, groundedness, survival, physical needs, power, growth
Governs:  back, feet, hips spine, legs
Color:  red or black
Stones:  black obsidian, black onyx, black tourmaline, bloodstone, brecciated jasper, carnelian, cuprite, red garnet, hematite, leopardskin jasper, red calcite, red coral, red spinel, ruby, ruby aura quartz, thulite, tourmaline (rubellite), red zircon

Located at the base of the spine and groin area, this is the animal or base nature. It is also taste and smell. The Root chakra is associated with adrenals, kidneys, muscles and arterial blood.

The Root Chakra links us to the physical world, solidity and support - especially to the physical body. It is the foundation of energy.The Base or Root Chakra manifests strongly in the motivation to ensure personal survival by way of food, rest, and sexual expression. Spiritually, the base chakra has to do with protection of individual integrity. It is an energy center that provides a solid ground from which to establish our equilibrium in order to ascend to higher awareness.

Some signs that the Base Chakra is out of balance are:

* Restlessness
* Lack of energy
* Loss of interest in the real world or practical survival
* Volatile emotions
* Obsession with one thing
* Selfishness

ROOT CHAKRA COLOR
The color associated with the root chakra is Red. Red symbolizes life, vitality, strength and the physical nature of man. In nature, red represents heat, fire and anger. Rose-red is the color of universal harmony. All the red stones (ruby, garnet, red jasper, bloodstone, rose quartz, coral) are used with the root chakra.
 
HEALING AND THE ROOT CHAKRA
For healing, these stones are said to be excellent for anemia and other blood deficiencies. Red offers a healing vibration for emaciation, depression or lethargy.
 
 
Svadhisthana - Spleen or Sacral Hara Chakra - Second Chakra
Associated with:  emotional balance, passion, creativity, abundance, freedom, personal expression, sexuality
Governs:  sexual organs, bladder, bowel and lower intestine
Color:  orange
Stones:  amber, carnelian, crocoite, fire opal, golden beryl (heliodor), honey calcite, orange calcite, orange spinel, paraparadsha sapphire, peach aventurine, sheelite, sunstone

Located at the genitals, this chakra monitors sexuality and reproduction. Svadhisthana chakra is associated with reproductive organs, stomach and colon.

SVADHISTHANA CHAKRA - Color
The color associated with the sacral hara chakra is Orange. Orange symbolizes energy. It is a combination of red (for personality) and yellow (for wisdom). Orange integrates these to help us overcome anger and develop self control.

All the orange stones (carnelian, orange jasper, fire opal) are used with the sacral hara chakra.

HEALING AND THE SVADHISTHANA CHAKRA
For healing, these stones are essential for health and vitality. It regulates food intake. Orange is warm and positive.
 

Manipura - Solar Plexus Chakra - Third Chakra
Associated with:
  personal power, strength, sense of self-worth, self-confidence, laughter, humor, joy
Governs:  stomach, upper intestines, upper back, upper spine
Color:  yellow
Stones:  amber, andalusite, chrysoberyl, citrine, honey calcite, rutilated quartz, yellow-brown scapolite, sphalerite, sphene, sulphur, sunstone, topaz, yellow aragonite, yellow calcite, yellow carnelian, yellow sapphire 

Located midway between the rib cage and the navel, this is the sense of identity. The Solar plexus chakra is associated with the pancreas, liver, gall bladder, spleen, digestive system and nervous system.

The solar plexus chakra is associated with the fire element because fire provides warmth and comfort, but also can cause fear and terror. This chakra spans a wide emotional area.
The solar plexus chakra allows one to really know oneself.

Some signs that the Solar Plexus Chakra is out of balance are:

* Difficulty concentrating
* Poor ability to make decisions or judge a situation accurately
* A feeling that you are more important than other people
* Trouble taking action or getting things done

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA - Color
The color associated with the solar plexus chakra is Yellow. Yellow is the symbol of the mind, intellect, high intelligence and wisdom. It is a positive magnetic vibration that acts as an equalizer for irritable conditions of the nervous system. The solar plexus is the organizing brain of the nervous system and as such, is an important power center that should be kept in a perfect equilibrium.

All the yellow stones (topaz, citrine, yellow zircon, amber) are used with the solar plexus chakra.
 
HEALING AND THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
For healing, these stones are said to aid in the treatment of diabetes and constipation. They can also be used to neutralize a haggard or a fat condition. 
 
 
Anahata - Heart Chakra - Fourth Chakra
Associated with:
  love, unconditional love, emotions
Governs:  heart, lungs, blood and circulation
Color:  green and/or pink
Stones:  actinolite, cuprite (balances heart chakra with root chakra), diopside, dioptase, emerald, fluorite, green apatite, green calcite, grossular garnet, euclase, jade, kunzite (spodumene) malachite, moldavite, moss agate, nephrite, pink manganocalcite, peridot, pink optical calcite, prase, rose quartz, rubellite, tourmaline (especially watermelon), variscite, zoisite

Located near the center of the breastbone or sternum, this chakra represents higher consciousness and love. The Heart chakra is associated with the heart, thymus gland, lower lung and circulatory system.

The heart chakra acts as the balance point for all the chakras. It governs our relationships and how we interact with other people. A balanced heart chakra is expressed in acceptance of self and others, personal values and ethics, following one's unique direction in life.
A balanced Heart Chakra means expansion, freedom and growth.
Some signs that the Heart Chakra is out of balance are:

* Lack of self discipline
* Difficulty in relationships
* An attempt to live vicariously through another
* Dependence on someone else for your happiness

HEART CHAKRA - Color
The color associated with the heart chakra is Green. Green symbolizes harmony, creativity, health, abundance and nature. It is the combining of yellow (soul) and blue (spirit). Green, nature's color, offers new energy and revitalizes tired nerves.

All the green stones (emerald, green tourmaline, malachite, jade, chrysoprase, dipotase, peridot, aventurine, moss agate, green jasper)  are used with the heart chakra.
 
HEALING AND THE HEART CHAKRA
For healing, green is used to balance the vibrations of the nervous system. It is said to aid any heart problem or blood pressure disorder. It is also used to restore tired nerves and will help those in need of more energy.

Although green is the primary color used with the heart chakra, it can also be effective to use pink stones (such as rose quartz or rhodonite) if more softness, affection and love seem to be needed in working with the heart chakra.


Vishuddha - Throat Chakra - Fifth Chakra
Associated with:
  communication, truthfulness, expression of will power and creativity
Governs:  throat, thyroid, mouth, teeth, tongue, jaw.
Color:  blue or turquoise
Stones:  amazonite, aqua aura, aquamarine, blue calcite, blue lace agate, blue tigers eye, blue topaz, dumortierite (blue quartz), euclase (stimulates), kyanite, lapis, opal, blue smithsonite, sodalite, turquoise
 
Located at the throat, this chakra is associated with creativity, self-expression and the search for truth. The Throat chakra is associated with thyroid gland, upper lungs and respiratory system. The throat chakra brings out your inner truth.

The throat chakra allows us to communicate our thoughts and feelings. It is directly connected to the ability to express inner creativity. Both teaching and learning are affected by the balance of the throat chakra.

Some signs that the Throat Chakra is out of balance are:

* Difficulty expressing oneself
* Poor learning ability
* Habitual lying
* Fear, doubt, uncertainty

THROAT CHAKRA - Color
The color associated with the throat chakra is Blue. Blue is the symbol of inspiration, devotion, infinity and religious goals. It produces calm and peace. The throat chakra is the focusing point of the spoken word, and the expression of feelings via communication.

All the blue stones (sapphire, lapis lazuli, blue topaz, aquamarine, turquoise, chrysocolla and sodalite) are used with the throat chakra.
 
HEALING AND THE THROAT CHAKRA
For healing, these stones are said to aid the treatment of any blockage or disease of the throat. It is also helpful when inflammation occurs, since blue is a cooling color. It is also said to aid with internal bleeding and nervous conditions.

Deep blue indicates intense power, and light blue (or azures) symbolize high ethical inspiration.
 

Ajna - Brow or Third Eye Chakra - Sixth Chakra
Associated with:
  coordination, balance, mental clarity, psychic abilities especially clairvoyance, intuition, wisdom
Governs:  pituitary gland, pineal gland, skull, eyes, brain, nervous system, the senses
Color:  indigo, violet, purple
Stones:  amazonite, amethyst, apatite, apophyllite, azurite, chevron amethyst, charoite, indicolite, iolite, lapis, picture rock, purple fluorite, sapphire, scolecite, sodalite, spinel (dark blue), sugilite

Located between the eyes, this chakra is intelligence and psychic power. Third eye chakra is associated with the pituitary gland, eyes, nose, ears and skeletal system.

The brow chakra is directly related to your senses of sight and hearing. It has to do with perception. It is the seat of understanding that affects how we see the world we live in and how we make sense of what is being perceived. Balancing this chakra can help remove confusion or indecision and increase the ability to see clearly and make important distinctions.

Some signs that the Brow Chakra is out of balance are:

* Jumping to conclusions
* Confusion
* Indecision
* Inability to see the bigger picture in life situations

Place an azurite on the third eye during meditation to increase understanding and inner vision.

BROW (THIRD EYE) CHAKRA - Color
The color associated with the third eye chakra is Indigo. Indigo is the symbol of spiritual attainment, self-mastery and wisdom. It aids in the opening of the third eye (inner and outer vision) and opens the doors to the subconscious, so that negative elements can be eliminated and higher elements can be attained.

All the indigo stones (indigo, sapphire, azurite) are used with the third eye chakra.

For healing, these stones are said to aid the treatment of mental disorders.
 

Sahasrara - Crown Chakra - Seventh Chakra
Associated with:
  spirituality, life force energy, knowingness, higher self, ultimate wisdom
Governs:  top of spinal cord, brain stem, pain center, nerves
Color:  white, purple/violet, gold
Stones:  amethyst, apophyllite, chevron amethyst, clear calcite, danburite, diamond, euclase, iolite, clear quartz, herkimer diamond, moonstone, opal, rainbow moonstone, scapolite (purple), scolecite, selenite, spodumene

Located above the head, this chakra links individual and universal. The Crown chakra is associated with the pineal gland, brain and central nervous system.

The crown chakra is the body's primary co-ordination center. It ensures a connection to universal sources of energy and with the world as a whole. A balanced crown chakra allows for expanded awareness on an emotional level.
The crown chakra signifies illumination.

Some signs that the Crown Chakra is out of balance are:

* Co-ordination difficulties
* Poor balance and clumsiness
* An attempt to stop new thoughts (in self or others)
* Lack of spiritual exploration

CROWN CHAKRA - Color
The color associated with the crown chakra is Violet. Violet is the ray of spiritual mastery. It is a blend of red (matter) and blue (spirit) and is associated with transformation. When working with the stones:

* Darker tones are associated with sorrow
* Deep purple symbolizes high spiritual attainment
* Pale Lilac means cosmic consciousness and love for humanity
* Bluish purple stands for transcendant idealism

All the violet stones are used with the crown chakra.

Aura Colors Surrounding the Body

The aura, which is an electromagnetic field that surrounds the body, can indicate the body health, mental health and spiritual health of an individual. Clear and bright colors indicate good health. Muddy and dark colors indicate an unhealthy or negative state.

The idea of the aura surrounding the body is common in most spiritual traditions. It is a recurrent theme in religious art of the early Greeks and Romans, along with Buddhists and Christians, all show a halo also called a nimbus or aureole.
